about us

Who we are

We are an independent community benefit society based in Greater Manchester and the North West, whose mission is to empower homeowners, communities and organisations to collectively tackle climate change in our own homes.

What we do

Help clients overcome the barriers to commissioning retrofit.
Develop capacity to meet demand for retrofit.
Offer software and training to help like-minded organisations follow our lead.
Inspire and collaborate with others in the UK and Europe who share our vision.

What we believe

Our name is ‘People Powered’ and we take pride in that statement.

Homes should be warm, healthy, and comfortable to live in.
Retrofit should be done properly - not rushed or botched.
People deserve clear, unbiased advice from experts before they spend money.
Good decisions early on prevent costly mistakes later.

In our services to householders, we remain independent.

We don't install products or measures ourselves
We don’t take commission from contractors—or pay them commission!
Our advice is based on what’s right for your home and your plans

Why we do it

The UK’s 29 million homes are responsible for around 14% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. So, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and tackle climate change, almost all housing needs some form of retrofit.

But retrofit isn’t always straightforward and concerns are common. What are the right measures for my home? What improvement will I see? Where can I find reliable contractors with the right skills? How can we build capacity to do more?

Established with government support and backed by the community energy co-operative Carbon Co-op, in 2021, we became an independent Community Benefit Society. We were funded through a community share offer - meaning we’re accountable to our members and our mission, not shareholders.
